15th Birthday Showreel

To celebrate our 15th birthday, we asked the boys in our studio to have a play around and come up with something to highlight a few of our most successful projects from the past decade and a half. The result is the showreel you can see on our website.

This showreel provided us with an opportunity to test out some of the capabilities of HTML5 which is being developed to combine the capabilities of (and eventually replace) other languages. We used HTML5 in addition to modern JavaScript practices, but HTML5 allowed us to animate certain elements (e.g. the floating hearts, the coloured bubbles) and it also meant we could create all this without the use of a video/flash plugin so it will work on devices like iPads (such as the iPad 2 shown below - a 15th birthday present to ourselves).

The increasing use of HTML5 on the web will lead to a better user experience, particularly in the following areas:
- Videos - instead of using a flash plugin or similar, the video will play straight from your browser
- JavaScript - JavaScript is used to add interactive features to a website, for example displaying a message when the mouse moves over an object or clicking a button to expand a form. JavaScript does not work in all browsers whereas HTML5 works with the majority of newer browsers
- Mobile - one of the key benefits of HTML5 is that a lot of the latest mobiles support it, meaning pretty much whatever works on desktop computer’s browser will work on a mobile. This is especially useful for the iPhone which does not support Flash
- SEO- because there are no Flash elements all the content of a site can be easily crawled by search engines, improving SEO
