Huddersfield University Graduate Degree Show
OK, so yes it was an excuse to head out to Huddersfield for some beers at Zephyr and a curry at The Nawaab, a town we frequent only once a year when the students of the multimedia and graphics are showing off their final projects.
This year was a bit special, as they have now moved from Canalside to the quite beautiful new Creative Arts Building; this space would certainly have inspired me as a young student. Check out Iman’s images on Flickr.
There was quite a bit of 3D work at the show, the two 3D pieces that I favoured were Pull by James Fleming, an animation inspired by George Méliès that included a massive amount of sketch work and prototyping for the final piece.
Then there was Earth 1.0 by Chris Moran, a bit short on narrative this one but just for pure craft it’s worth a mention.
The real stand out piece for me was Designing The News by Dave Bowker, an experimental piece that created a visual representation of the Guardian newspaper. The result was some pretty great looking graphics and typography.
Just before we quit the place for more beers at Vox we checked out a live piece by singer/songwriter/student Jonathon McCullough, Painting on Silence is a dynamic tool that links imagery and sound to enhance a live musical performance, not really one for abstract projects but I must admit I did like the song and the animation made it much more engaging.
All these projects can be found at the degree show website Studio 309.

I remember Canalside, I liked the building, I agree though the new Creative Arts building looks really nice, their new Student Union is pretty good too!
